Elon had a passion for innovation from an early age. During his school life, Elon struggled a lot with social interaction, due to which he was often bullied. He spent most of his time with computers and books. By 12, he was able to create a video game and sold it for $500, making a mark in this visionary entrepreneur’s journey. Elon left for Canada at the age of 17 and later attended the University of Pennsylvania, in the US, where he earned his degree in physics and economics.
By 1994, Elon had an internship in Silicon Valley at a start-up called Pinnacle Research Institute, which worked on supercapacitors for energy storage for rockets. By 1995, he was accepted into a graduate program at Stanford University, but he decided not to attend. Elon’s innovation in technology towards his first major entrepreneurial venture was Zip2, a company that he co-founded in 1996. This company was eventually acquired by Compaq in 1995 for $307 million, out of which Musk earned $ 22 million.
He went on to found X.com, which provided online financial services. This company later became PayPal after merging with Confinity. PayPal was the future of technology for digital payment at that time. In 2002, eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion, which made Musk $180 million.
In 2001, Elon became a part of a non-profit society, and inspired by the vision of this non-profit, he decided to launch his own space exploration company, SpaceX. SpaceX was meant to build affordable rockets and colonize Mars with affordable space travel. This was one of the most bold visions of any entrepreneur. During the early days of SpaceX, Elon suffered numerous failures, and eventually, on the fourth launch, SpaceX was successful. By 2008, SpaceX partnered with NASA to launch spacecraft to the International Space Station. SpaceX saw numerous achievements, where they were successful in landing Falcon 9 with a lower travel cost. SpaceX, in 2020, became the first private company to send astronauts to the International Space Station.
While working on SpaceX, Elon also decided to try his luck in revolutionizing the transportation industry. In 2004 he joined Tesla Motors and later became the CEO of this electric car startup. Elon Musk’s success story can never be complete without mentioning his contribution towards Tesla. The Tesla Roadster, launched in 2008, became the first stylish yet fast electric car.
By 2012, Tesla started launching luxury sedans, which were known for their performance. Today, Tesla is known to have autopilot and AI-driven features for self-driving, etc. Tesla has set up its own gigafactories for battery production to reduce costs. It has also launched various affordable models that are preferred by the masses. This visionary entrepreneur has made Tesla one of the most valuable auto manufacturers whose value has surpassed various giants like Volkswagen, Ford, etc.
He has also created various companies like Neuralink and The Boring Company, both launched in 2011, which he says are the future of technology. One works on seamless integration of AI and the human brain, and the other one works towards upgrading urban transportation. Neuralink is focusing towards providing motor support to paralysed individuals with neurological disorders. With his efforts, Tesla and SpaceX’s journey has been right to the top of the industry, where they are one of the leading global companies. This visionary entrepreneur is known for his ambitious goals and risk-taking capacity. Elon is a high-risk taker who works 80 to 100 hours per week.
